Seascapes
One of the best contemporary seascape painters
Vasilis is admittedly one of the best contemporary seascape painters. His interest in the sea is very old: from his early steps in painting, he meticulously studied the Seascape painting techniques of the most influential classic masters on the field. He experimented with the rendering of the sea from impressionism to expressionism and abstract, but the naturalistic approach and the accurate depiction epitomizes his style.
He was especially influenced from the technique of the great Russian seascape painter, Ivan Aivazofsky. Vasilis’s ability to depict the sea in every possible form, transmitting equally directly to viewer the tranquillity of a shore and the wilderness of the threatening waves is unique.
The seascapes of Vasilis present usually an old traditional scene: they can be fishermen with sailing boats ready to depart or return, a rocky beach with a lighthouse, an idyllic calm scene, a wild coast, whipped from the waves, a night presentation, a rare depiction or even the coast of old Venice or of his city, Thessaloniki. The sky encompasses perfectly the seascape in a powerful balance.
